Humanity joined the multiverse in the normal way—they opened a portal to another plane of existence. For a very few, travel between planes was done to facilitate commerce and trade of ideas, but it has its dangers, and that's where Peter Young comes into things.

Peter is experienced not just with traveling to lower-energy planes but also higher-energy ones—ones that are as likely to turn you into a shrub as a member of the dominant society. He got a phone call to check out a new business that is producing new technology the likes of which no plane has seen before.
